Twilight
György Fehér, 1990, 105 min

Following the world premiere of its restored version at Close Up with curator Stanley Schtinter in 2021, this special screening hosted by Gareth Evans of Twilight marks publication of award-winning German writer Esther Kinsky's Seeing Further in English by Fitzcarraldo Editions. The book details Kinsky's remarkable revival of a long-since closed small town Hungarian cinema and is a powerfully eloquent declaration of love to the cinema and the collective experience of watching.

Twilight (Szürkület) is based on writings by Swiss author Friedrich Dürrenmatt.  Fehér’s hypnotic, transcendent adaptation, one of only two long-unavailable feature films he made, is a unique and haunting experience.

A seasoned detective investigates a series of child murders, succumbing to an all-consuming and tragic obsession with the case, finding empty solace in his quest for vengeance. What emerges is not a crime story, but a harrowing venture through the darkness of the human soul. Twilight unfolds with breathtaking cinematography and haunting sound design, allowing the mystery to emerge in tantalisingly atmospheric and meditative fashion.

Following the screening, Esther Kinsky, who met Fehér, will be in conversation with Stanley Schtinter about her book, the film and their shared passion for Hungarian cinema and the artform itself.

Novelist and poet Esther Kinsky grew up by the river Rhine and lived in London for twelve years. She has translated many notable Polish and English authors, including Iain Sinclair, into German. Her River and Grove won numerous literary prizes in Germany. Seeing Further, her fourth book published by Fitzcarraldo Editions, will be on sale on the night.
